Human rights activists say that public awareness of the dangers of public activism in Ukraine has increased significantly in 2019, following the death of Kateryna Gandziuk. A poll conducted by the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Fund in November 2019 found that 84% of Ukrainians consider attacks on civic activists a serious problem, while 77% consider public activism a dangerous activity.
Human rights activists are convinced that the authorities should constantly pay attention to investigations into crimes against activists in order to facilitate the effectiveness of such investigations. In addition, the establishment of permanent platforms for cooperation in these matters with the public could increase the level of communication that is currently insufficient, and public condemnation of persecution and recognition of the importance of human rights activists and public activists – influence the formation of public opinion on the inadmissibility of such persecution.
Unfortunately, the Ukrainian authorities have taken little action to respond to threats to human rights defenders.
